This year at Mendip Spring the team medal format was found to be tough despite the greens being in great condition. It was very difficult for all competitors to keep the ball on the green.

Wells finished above midway, but didn’t attract the prizes. Mark Western, Ian Burr, Mike Metcalfe, Patrick Berwick, Zac Cambourne, Glen Crocker, Josh Knight, Jack Heginbotham, Simon Lord & Toby Clark were the team.

The following day, the S.G.U. staged the very prestigious Trounson Trophy at Burnham & Berrow. We entered early enough to have two teams accepted & secure two early start times.
All clubs in Somerset enter this singles team medal event which I have seen Wells win four times in the past. This Year Matt Parham, Simon Lord, Toby Clark & Richard Twinney formed the ‘A’ team but struggled by finding much too much rough.
Alan Todd, Zac Cambourne, Josh Knight & Jack Heginbotham were the ‘B’ team & generally all played quite well. Well enough that is, to hold on to third position for much of the day. Unfortunately they were nudged out of any prizes toward the end.
WELL DONE but hard luck

The Club team played Bath at Mendip on Sunday 27th Sept. in the final of the most sought after golf trophy in Somerset – that Somerset Bowl.
It is not the most attractive trophy but it is steeped with years of history much of it with Wells Golf Club (I could write a book ! since 1983) Many member supporters were there to see the Wells “boys” out & as expected it was to be a tight match. Unfortunately the result was the same 3 – 2 loss, as last year. We used quite a big squad this year through the rounds so I thank …Phil White, Zac Cambourne, Matt Parham, Jack Palmer, Josh Knight, Simon Lord, Toby Clark, Rob Rossiter, Richard Twinney, Tim Ashman, Jack Heginbotham, Mark Western, Ian Burr, Alan Todd, Mike Metcalfe & Glen Crocker. You have been a great squad.

DATES & NEWS
I attended the league fixtures meeting for 2010 & for a change they were sorted out reasonably quickly & look to be fairly comfortable except perhaps for a few consecutive 2nd team matches early season. There are just two 1st team Friday night games against Mendip Spring. Zac & Rob will circulate in good time.

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 6th Get your name on the list on our teams notice board for YOUR dinner – it’s that simple. Don’t leave it ‘til the day before the event. Incredibly, for Wells Golf Club numbers are well up (60 odd) at the time of writing - it would be excellent to reach 80 which I believe is possible.
I am away for most of October so Zac or Rob will be chasing you for some cash £20. Make it easy for them & even offer before being asked. WE NEED TO KNOW NUMBERS & who knows, YOU may have a players of the year award to come ! ?
All winners & runners up of the Clubs’ Winter Comps will be there & some Avalon league players say they will be there (hope so – we are presenting their player of the year award !)This is my last “journal” I’ll miss you boys. Keep swinging….Good Golfing

It was a busy weekend for the Club team players who were playing team foursomes medal at Mendip Spring in the Bristol & District Golf League Finals day amongst 250 competitors & singles medal (Sunday) for the Somerset Golf Unions’ Trounson Trophy at Burnham & Berrow.
Mark Western with Ian Burr, Mike Metcalfe with Patrick Berwick, Jack Heginbotham with Josh Knight, Zac Cambourne with Glen Crocker & Simon Lord with Toby Clark all played very well at Mendip Spring & like so many others on this superb Summers day, found the greens in excellent condition but somehow tricky to sink crucial putts. They finished midway in the large field of the finest amateur club golfers in the area. Saltford won the major prize.
At Burnham two Wells teams of four were lucky to get early start times & won’t play this challenging links course in better conditions. However despite a glorious sunny day the rough still managed to attract many slightly straying shots. Team ‘A’ consisting of Matt Parham, Simon Lord, Toby Clark & Richard Twinney all had their fair share of trouble but Team ‘B’ of Zac Cambourne, Jack Heginbotham, Josh Knight & Alan Todd held third position for a considerable period only to be nudged out of the prizes later.
Alan

Wells needed one point from their last two games to maintain division 3 status, and achieved a home win 3/2 against Worlebury and 2 vital points on Saturday. This was a significant reversal of the 5-0 thrashing at Worlebury's hands 2 weeks ago.The first three pairs all won, Alan Todd and Colin Mills at the 17th, Rob Rossiter and Tim Taylor at the same hole and more comfortably the strong pairing of Toby Clark and Simon Lord who birdied 15 for a 4 and 3 victory. That left the old hands Mike Metcalfe with Jack Heginbotham and Martin Waller with Chris Betenson to finish at the 17th in second place.
A great result ensuring Division 3 status and all credit to those who have played all season.

The match Sponsor was Alan Pickstone school of motoring

The club team travelled to Clevedon to play against Taunton Vale in the semi final of the Somerset Bowl. Some members also travelled in support & were of great encouragement for which the team is grateful.

Simon Lord (4) with Toby Clark (5) set out in this handicap foursomes (half the difference of combined) match play knock out encounter. They gave 3 shots but their position on the podium was never in doubt – winners all the way & a pleasure to see two young men enjoy themselves around the golf course. They won 3 & 2

Alan Todd (5) with Zac Cambourne (8) followed receiving 1 shot but never really settled into the good golf we are accustomed to & lost 3 & 2.

Richard Twinney (8) & Tim Ashman (9) received 2 shots & were soon in trouble – in fact 3 down after 7 but incredible determination by both gradually turned their game into an excellent 3 & 2 victory.

Mark Western (8) & Ian Burr (10) were also down at 7 but by 4 despite receiving 2 shots. They too however recovered to be all square at 14 but unfortunately fell 1 down.

At the back true competitors Mike Metcalfe (7) & Glen Crocker (12) received 3 but only ever looked in danger on the first after that they were very commanding in a 6 & 4 win.

This 3 & 2 win sends Wells into the final of the Somerset Bowl for the second time in as many years. The opposition or venue is not yet known but it is scheduled for September 27th.

Report 17th August 2009

Saturday 15th August saw Wells in the middle of their busy run to the end of the season welcome Filton, fresh after their win over Mendip.

First off for Wells was Simon Lord and Toby Clark, a strong pair anywhere and very hard to beat at home. Despite Toby having a bit of a day, the win was secured on the 16th 3 and 2.
Second pair was reliable team man Robbie Rossiter with Jack Palmer, this was a hard fought match which ended on the 17th when Robbie performed a trick shot by keeping the ball from his chip shot on his club for a few seconds! Declaring a double hit, the match was lost 2 and 1.
Third out was Josh Knight and Mark Western, both played well and it went to the wire with the Wells pair winning 1 up on the last. Mark was first to point out Josh was exceptional today.
Fourth pair out today was Tim Ashman and Colin Mills, another close match secured a half point with the match going all the way to the last.
That was the match to Wells, as Mike Metcalfe and Jack Hegginbotham had inflicted another 5 and 4 defeat on their opponents, putting them in the running as strongest pair of the season.
The result was 3½. 1½ to Wells which is two points badly needed. One more point from the last three games and survival in division 3 will be secured.
We are most grateful to Pro Tyres (Wells Tyre Service) who sponsored this match & are also the teams’ main sponsor of shirts & sweaters.

The seconds were without key players due to holidays but arrived at Long Ashton in a determined mood to gain points they most desperately needed to avoid the threat of relegation in this, their last league match.
A mix of youth & experience looked good on paper but all were soon to be deflated before the match set off as one player failed to arrive within the allotted time so they were one down before starting.
Richard Spencer with Danny Griffiths didn’t have the best of games & lost 3 & 2 whereas Richard Twinney with Tim Ashman always had a win in their sights even if they had to wait until the last to get it.
Young members Tom Leaney & Patrick Berwick showed great promise - couldn’t master the greens & lost just 2 & 1. At the back, Simon Jackson & Ian Burr struggled at the start but gradually niggled away to win 2 & 1 but it’ll be a 3 - 2 team loss that will be recorded.
What might have been, could have ensured the team staying in division six but it’s all in the hands of Kingsdown who have two home games yet to play.
The Club team play the semi final of the Somerset Bowl next Sunday (23rd), at Clevedon against Taunton Vale at 3 p.m.

August 2009

Wells 1st team travelled to Worlebury for the 6th match of their season and were surprised to find the sun shining and no requirement for waterproofs. With an accent on age and experience Wells hoped to prevail against a younger Worlebury side.
As it turned out youth had its day and Wells succumbed 5-0 although 3 of the 5 matches went to the 18th. Simon Lord and Toby Clark, Mike Metcalfe and Jack Heginbotham and new pairing of Graeme Dowden and Vic Burgoyne took their opponents to the last only to fall at the final fence.
Skipper Martin Waller with partner Colin Mills and George Davis and Steve Heath were not so lucky, losing out earlier in the round. Wells have a double header next weekend, home on Saturday against Filton 1st & away the next day at The Park 1st and need a couple of good results.
Mike

Wells 2nds travelled to Clevedon without captain Zac and one or two other regulars.
They can have no complaints as the home side made the most of the benign hot conditions. Rich Spencer and Danny Griffiths fought back from 4 down to only lose 1 down.

The losing pattern was followed by all with stand skipper Glen Crocker and Rich Lord fighting back from 4 down also but still ended up losing 2&1.The usual strong tail enders Simon Jackson and Ian Burr frittered away a 3 hole advantage to also go down 2&1.
This means next weekend`s rearranged away fixture with Long Ashton will decide the teams fate.

Glen Crocker

Also playing in the second team were Mark Western with Stuart Austwick & Tom Leaney with Richard Twinney. A loss at Long Ashton will send the 2nds down into division six. Whatever happens, a fine group of younger players have been “blooded” into adult scratch foursomes, a policy that will pay dividends – one day

Alan

report 1/8/09

The Club team reached the quarter final of the S.G.U. scratch Pickeridge Bowl for the first time & travelled to play against Tall Pines at Taunton Vale on an extremely wet 1st of August.
Unfortunately, most of the lower handicaps were unavailable for selection & Alan Shore had to dig deep to create a team who generally were completely out “handicapped”.
Tall Pines have an entire team squad – all 5 or below handicap & the team that played in this match were 4 or below. What developed was an extraordinary & thrilling match played off scratch.

Richard Twinney (9) set out first, knowing that his three h/c opposition would be confident especially after a bad 1st hole by Richard, but this match was to see a very determined Wells member fight only to be unlucky to lose at 17.

Junior Captain James Burge (10) hasn’t been playing that well of late & was hesitant about playing at all but despite facing a 4 h/cap he will feel 10 feet tall after a resounding 7 & 5 win – yes 7 & 5 win!!!

When asked to stand in at a late date 60 odd year old George Davis (11) didn’t hesitate to turn out for the club team that he has served so well over the past 30 odd years. George faced a 3 h/cap but wasn’t fazed at all & did so well to take his man to 16 even if it was to lose.

Alan Todd (5) was in a hurry as he was flying to a Portuguese holiday – he needn’t have worried he beat his 3 h/cap 7 & 6 & could have taken an earlier flight. The way he played he would have beaten anyone that day.

With the match evenly poised the last opposing man was off scratch but it didn’t bother young Josh Knight (5) who played incredibly well (again) & he will be disappointed to have lost at 17 but with the rest of the team he should be proud of an exceptional performance that made a 3 – 2 loss feel like a win.
